The Chariot

The Chariot
No 131, Maya avenue, Colombo 6 (Head office)
This is our first review on the restaurants section and we chose “The Chariot” in Maya avenue because it was our very first date spot.  Walking into the restaurant, we were surprised seeing the lovely interior, the food and service they offer. It was total value for money. If you want to have a great dine in experience for a real worthy price, The Chariot is a definite option.
The Chariot also has branches in Dehiwela, Bambalapitiya, Panadura, Pelawatte, ODEL

Known for

They are known for their Jaffna dishes which they serve under the motto of “Yummy Yarlpanam”. Also renowned for their Milk Hoppers and short eats.

Interior seating arrangements

We would say it’s the interior of the restaurant that makes it special. Air conditioned place accommodating four tables (four chairs each) with tablemats, glasses and needed cutlery and also an outdoor dine in area (Not towards the road).

Menu

The Menu offered by The Chariot in Maya avenue, is the same as their other outlets. However, this outlet does not offer Sushi as similar to the World Trade Centre Outlet.
They offer a variety of Sri Lankan dishes especially Jaffna dishes, Short eats, Juices and deserts. The Menu can be found in this link. http://thechariot.lk/menu/

The Short eats are much spoken of and you can see many stopping by in the morning to get breakfast for their kids. The short eats are not mentioned in the above menu but it basically includes the common short eats and along with some chariot special items, with price ranging from 50/= to 200/=.
The Lunch dishes offered are satisfactory.  We have tried Nasi goreng and Chicken fried rice both were good. A good lunch (with desert) would cost between 500/= to 1000/= (for two). With the ambiance offered by the restaurant, it is total Value-For-Money. They also provide you with water when you dine in (you might have to ask for it sometimes).
Deserts, however, were not much impressive. They offer biscuit pudding, caramel pudding etc for a price of 60/= to 100/= in a yoghurt sized cup.
Milk hoppers are highly commended by all customers and are indeed the best offered by The Chariot. The koththu also falls into the same list.

Service

They are open from 7am to 10pm. The Staff is really customer friendly and concerned. Waiting time was 12 minutes for 2 dishes of chicken fried rice at around 1pm, when there were only two other customers along with us both. They have an open kitchen where the customer could see how the dish is served and curries are kept. Also there are no additional service tax charge and also no Wi-Fi connection.

Privacy

It is a very silent place. It is not congested much in the morning or afternoon. Provides a lovely atmosphere to dine in with your better half. But could be crowded on weekends due to the student crowd from nearby tuition providers.

Events

They have various events like koththu & Mongolian night, Mongolian & BBQ night, Dosa night, Sri Lankan night, Pittu night etc. You can get the information about their latest events through their Facebook profile http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Chariot-Restaurant/225477197495090
